Surtr, or Surtur in modern Icelandic, is a fire giant from Norse mythology. He guards Muspelheim, the land of fire that existed before the world began, next to the icy Niflheim. He appears in both the Poetic Edda and Snorri Sturluson's Prose Edda, and in both he plays a big part in Ragnarök. With his burning sword he goes to war against the gods and fights Freyr, and then his fire burns the whole world. Only two humans survive, Líf and Lífþrasir.
